Stylophone The Original Pocket Synthesizer

This is the 1968 stylus synth that never went away — still a pocket instrument at around $40, and still the cheapest doorway into making a tune.

The Stylophone is the pocket synthesizer David Bowie used on Space Oddity: a metal keyboard played with a stylus, with a built-in speaker, a battery and a switch that adds vibrato. It is deliberately limited, which is why it keeps turning up in recordings decades later, and it costs roughly what a takeaway does. One of the very few instruments you can learn the basics of in an afternoon.
