The MA871 replaces the old optical refractometer with a digital readout: you place a drop of sample on the prism, press a button, and get a Brix value to 0.1 percent on the LCD within a couple of seconds. It holds automatic temperature compensation, so readings stay consistent whether the sample is chilled wort or warm fruit juice. Brewers use it to track fermentation, coffee people use it to measure extraction and TDS in the cup, and it is equally at home checking grape ripeness, honey moisture or maple sap. It ships with a hard case and runs on a standard battery.
